So it begins...

There are many factors that impede opportunity in education: socioeconomic, home life, mental health, distribution of IQ and countless others. However, many of us are also 50m ahead of a whole group of people that we are not even very aware of, in what we consider the biggest 300m sprint of our lives - navigating the education system. Students with a disability have to work twice as hard to overcome obstacles and learn in this environment, as demanding as it already is. These individuals are then, on top of this, often plagued every day by a society that expects them to identify and call out injustices against their basic rights – rights which should be rectified according to law or fought by all for the sake of equality!

Recognising these foundational flaws inspired me to start a page that attempts to inform others about the current lack of accountability by our government and businesses about this gap in access to equal education, public transport and even buildings. Even though I may not be able to make a huge difference in this larger picture of societal negligence, I believe I can make some impact on that most essential world of education. Back in 2017, I helped organise the event ‘Kids Fun Run with Thomas’, sponsoring blind and vision impaired students. After this, I knew it was necessary for me and for those unhindered by the challenges of a disability, to support these students starting from 50m behind – maximising in every way possible the learning that sets us up for the rest of our lives and prepares us to face the difficulties of the world of work. That way, we have a chance to cross the finish line together as I did with the students that day of the fun run - hand in hand.
